Nail Surgery

What to Expect

Nail surgery is a minor procedure used to treat painful or repeatedly ingrown toenails when other treatments have not provided a lasting solution.

At The Dene Podiatry, your podiatrist will first assess the affected toenail and discuss whether nail surgery is the most appropriate treatment for you. We will explain the procedure clearly, answer any questions you may have, and make sure you understand what to expect before proceeding.

When Is Nail Surgery Considered?

Nail surgery may be considered when:

  • An ingrown toenail keeps returning
  • The nail is causing persistent pain or inflammation
  • Conservative treatment has not provided lasting relief
  • The shape of the nail repeatedly causes pressure into the surrounding skin
  • The condition is affecting walking, footwear, or daily comfort

Your podiatrist will assess the condition of the nail and surrounding skin before recommending surgery.

What Happens During Nail Surgery?

Nail surgery is performed under local anaesthetic.

This means that you will remain awake, but the affected toe will be completely numb. You should not feel pain during the procedure, although you may notice some pressure or movement.

Once the toe is numb, your podiatrist will carefully remove the problematic section of nail.

Depending on your individual circumstances:

  • Part of the nail may be removed
  • In some cases, the whole nail may be removed
  • A chemical treatment may be applied to the nail root to help prevent the problematic section from growing back

The procedure is usually relatively quick. Once completed, the toe will be covered with a sterile protective dressing before you leave the clinic.

After Your Procedure

Once the local anaesthetic begins to wear off, your toe may feel sore or tender.

This is usually manageable by following the aftercare advice provided by your podiatrist.

We will also advise you about:

  • Suitable footwear
  • Activity while the toe heals
  • Protecting the surgical area
  • What to expect during the healing process

Your Dressing

It is important to keep the dressing clean and dry until your pre-arranged follow-up appointment.

A few days after the procedure, your podiatrist will normally carry out the first re-dressing.

At this appointment, you will receive clear instructions explaining:

  • How to care for the toe at home
  • How to manage the dressing
  • How to keep the area clean
  • What changes are normal during healing
  • When you should contact the clinic for advice

Follow-Up and Healing

A follow-up appointment may be arranged to check your progress and monitor how the toe is healing.

Healing time varies from person to person depending on factors such as:

  • The type of procedure performed
  • Your general health
  • Circulation
  • The condition of the toe
  • How well aftercare instructions are followed

Your podiatrist will explain what is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Is Nail Surgery Right for Me?

Nail surgery can provide an effective long-term treatment for recurrent ingrown toenails, but it is not suitable for everyone.

Before recommending the procedure, your podiatrist will assess:

  • Your general health
  • Circulation to your feet
  • Sensation and nerve function
  • The condition of the affected toe and nail
  • Any relevant medical conditions
  • Your treatment history

The benefits, potential risks, and alternative treatment options will always be discussed with you so that you can make an informed decision about your care.

Alternatives to Nail Surgery

Not every problematic toenail requires surgery.

Depending on the shape of the nail, severity of symptoms, and your overall health, other options may be discussed, including conservative nail care or nail bracing.

Your podiatrist will recommend the approach considered most appropriate for your individual condition.

Professional, Reassuring Care

We understand that the idea of nail surgery can make some patients feel anxious.

At The Dene Podiatry, we take time to explain each stage of the procedure and make sure you feel comfortable and informed throughout your treatment.

If you have a painful or repeatedly ingrown toenail, we can assess it and discuss whether nail surgery may be suitable for you.
